Volume, Space and Mass

by kawrage

How do you calculate the volume of our bodies, the amount of space that we occupy?

Is it even a value that can be quantified, given the existence of many variables such as race, class, national belonging, sexuality?

I often worry about my mass; I worry that its increase would render me more noticeable. And being noticed by others is often a precursor to their avoiding you.

Having a lesser mass can enable us to walk without being noticed, causing lesser offence. Occupying lesser space would mean a lesser surface area to absorb the hatred, fear and disgust of the dominant and dominating. Having a lesser volume would make it easier to slip through the chinks of society.

There’s more to issues of weight, personal space and privacy than is usually discussed in mainstream feminist discourse…
